Yemen LNG observes international women’s day, announces Balqis Award 2014 winner

Sanaa, 10 March 2014 –Yemen LNG observed today in Sanaa the International Women’s Day in the presence of the company’s female members of staff, representatives of civil society organizations, media and lady government officials including the Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, Dr. Jawhra Hamoud Thabet. The event was also attended by Dr. Ahmed Bin Mubarak Secretary-General of the National Dialog Conference.
Under the theme, ‘Inspiring Change’, event activities featured success and inspiring stories by some female staff followed by announcement of the winner of Yemen LNG Balqis Award 2014, the first of its kind granted by an energy company to recognize exceptional contributions of woman associations in Yemen.
This is the fourth year in a row Yemen LNG marks the Day to celebrate its female members of staff and recognize their contribution to the realization of the largest industrial enterprise in Yemen. They represent over 30% of the workforce of Yemen LNG employees in Sana’a.
In his opening remarks, Yemen LNG General Manager, Jacques Azibert, paid a special tribute to the educated women ‘whose contributions to the development of Yemeni society are marked and tangible, be it in health, politics, development, education, and so on.’ He added, “In particular I should appreciate the role of our female colleagues who contributed to the construction of Yemen LNG project, the largest in Yemen.”
For her part, Dr. Jawhra Hamoud, Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, thanked Yemen LNG management for providing development programs, namely in education, for women in rural areas. “I am confident that when a woman receives proper education she can find the appropriate place to prosper and therefore contribute to the development of her own country.”
To align with this year’s theme ‘Inspiring Change’, three Yemen LNG female employees showcased different personal and inspiring experiences, citing examples of notable female leaders from Yemen and abroad, cultures and norms surrounding women, in addition to motivational ideas. Speakers included Ms. Mariam Al-Qubati, Fatima Al-Baiti and Jamila Al-Jaberi.

During the event, Mrs. Safaa Rawiah, General Manager of the Youth Leadership Development Foundation (YLDF), was announced winner of Yemen LNG Balqis Award 2014; $20,000 in value – in recognition of her remarkable contributions to the development of Yemeni women. “The Award added more encouragement and empowerment to me,” said Mrs Rawiah.
YLDF is a local non-governmental organization, and its programs aim at building the capacities of girls in specific and youth in general to enable them to play a leading role in the country in addition to increasing opportunities for the youth to contribute to the development of Yemen.
